Perceived Psychosocial Climate and Air Quality as Determinant of Job Satisfaction Among Accounting Educators In Universities in South –South Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the perceived psychosocial climate and indoor air quality as determinant of job satisfaction among accounting educators in universities in South–South Nigeria. The study formulated two aims, research questions, and hypotheses. A descriptive survey methodology was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire to gather information from 170 accounting lecturers across selected universities in the South–South region of Nigeria. The collected data were examined using mean scores and independent sample t-tests to evaluate the hypotheses. Results indicated that the psychosocial environment including workload, organizational communication, interpersonal relations, and workplace interactions plays a significant role in determining job satisfaction, with all measures showing mean scores above the 3.00 threshold for both male and female lecturers. Likewise, indoor air conditions, covering aspects such as ventilation, airflow, temperature, and office hygiene, were found to have a meaningful impact on job satisfaction. The t-test results showed that these differences were not statistically significant. This implies that accounting lecturers recognize the importance of psychosocial and environmental workplace factors in relation to job satisfaction. The study recommends that university administrators cultivate positive interpersonal relationships, enhance organizational communication, manage workloads efficiently, and sustain healthy indoor work settings to improve job satisfaction and overall employee well-being.
