Intrinsic Altruism Theory: A Theoretical Frame Work Highlighting Selfless Motivation and Its Implications for Management

Nwabuatu, Emmanuel Nnajiubah. Ph.D

Abstract

This article introduces Intrinsic Altruism Theory , an original theoretical framework proposing that authentic selfless behavior originates within an integrated internal motivational system comprising three constitutive elements: an innate prosocial orientation, empathic activation, and intrinsic altruistic reward. Intrinsic Altruism Theory departs from prior frameworks including kin selection theory, reciprocal altruism, social exchange theory, the empathy-altruism hypothesis, self-determination theory, and warm-glow giving theory by locating the motivational source of altruism in a coherent internal architecture whose primary orientation is genuinely other-directed, biologically grounded, and self-reinforcing over time. The theory advances six empirically tractable propositions and derives six managerial implications with direct application to leadership development, team design, organizational culture, employee well- being, incentive architecture, and the cultivation of altruistic leadership competencies. Theoretical departures from existing frameworks are systematically delineated, an agenda for empirical validation is outlined, and the broader significance of Intrinsic Altruism Theory for individual flourishing and collective well-being is discussed.
