Implications of Contributory Pension Scheme on Serving Police Officers in Nigeria

Abstract

The study assessed the implications of contributory pension scheme on serving police officers in Nigeria. The Contributory Pension Scheme has brought insignificant anxiety, low morale, and fear of post-service poverty among serving police officers in Nigeria. As many retirees receives meagre monthly pensions often that fail to provide a dignified life, resulting in widespread demands to exempt the police from the scheme and establish police pension board. The researcher adopted qualitative research method for the study. The total number of populations for the study was 370,000. The researcher made used of secondary source for data collection and data analyses. Findings of shows that: there is a growing and deep-rooted anxiety among serving officers, born from the belief that retirement is a descent into hardship. This fear has become so pervasive that noticeable demoralising effects showcase on their morale across ranks. The researcher recommended that: federal government should exit the Nigeria police from contributory pension scheme and establish a dedicated Police Pension Board, similar to their counterparts in other security agencies. And commence payment of pension arrears to the police retirees.
