Functional Relationship and Spatial Layout Work Environment as Determinant of Job Satisfaction Among Accounting Educators in Universities in South –South Nigeria

Alfred-Jaja Stella Wellignton-Igonibo

Abstract

This study examined functional relationships and spatial layout work environment as determinant of job satisfaction among accounting educators in universities in South–South Nigeria. Two objectives, research questions and hypotheses directed the investigation. Descriptive survey research design was used and a population of 170 accounting educators, comprising 127 males and 43 females, drawn from twelve federal and state universities in south- south Nigeria. The population size was manageable, hence the researcher used a census approach. Data were gathered with Functional Relationship and Spatial Layout Work Environment and Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (FRSLWEJSQ). The questionnaire was validated by experts using a 5-point rating scale, with a criterion mean of 3.00 for decision making. Mean statistics was adopted in analyzing the research questions, and t- tested was adopted to test the hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. The findings showed that both functional relationships among staff and the spatial arrangement of office environments play a strong role in influencing job satisfaction among accounting educators. The results of the t-test indicate that there was no significant difference among the responses of male and female accounting educators on the influence of these work environment factors. The study concludes that gender does not significantly affect how accounting educators perceive the influence of workplace conditions on their level of job satisfaction. It was recommended that university administrators should maintain consistent standards in office space planning and encourage effective communication and collaboration among staff in order to sustain high levels of job satisfaction within the academic workforce.
