Effects of Participatory Learning Strategy on Students’ Achievement in Social Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study investigated the effects of participatory learning strategy on students’ achievement in Social Studies in junior secondary schools in Jos South, Plateau State, Nigeria. Two specific objectives, two research questions answered and two hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the quasi-experimental research design. 264 JS II students from four junior secondary schools constituted the population of the study and a sample of 194 students drown through a non-proportional stratified sampling technique were used for both the experimental and control groups. Social Studies Achievement Test was used for data collection and was validated by three experts: one from Social Studies Education, one from Research, Measurement, and Evaluation, and one from Educational Psychology. The reliability index was established through a pilot study and a reliability coefficient of 0.891 was obtained. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The findings revealed that, participatory learning strategy significantly enhance students’ achievement in Social Studies and that that there was a significant difference between the Social Studies achievement mean scores of male and female students exposed to participatory learning strategy. It was recommended that, to improve students’ classroom participation and create gender friendly classroom, participatory learning strategy should be made a compulsory learning strategy at the junior secondary school curriculum.
