Prevalence and Predictors of Late Payments in the Nigerian Digital Lending Ecosystem: An Institutional Analysis

Pine, David Aondongu

Abstract

This study rigorously examines the prevalence and predictors of late payments within the Nigerian digital lending ecosystem, employing an institutional analysis framework. It specifically investigates how regulatory environments, cooperative governance, credit bureau integration, digital wallet interoperability, and risk management practices collectively influence repayment behaviors among cooperative members in Nigeria. By analyzing these institutional factors, the research aims to uncover the systemic drivers behind payment defaults, moving beyond individual borrower characteristics to broader structural influences. The study posits that strategic payment delays and administrative inefficiencies, alongside firms' financial difficulties, contribute significantly to late payments. Furthermore, deviations from standard payment terms and the absence of robust digital governance mechanisms exacerbate these delays.
