Abstract

This study explored the transformative potential of tourism as a vehicle for sustainable national development in Malawi and Nigeria within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals . Although both countries possess abundant natural and cultural resources, their tourism sectors remain under-optimized due to structural weaknesses, limited infrastructure and inconsistent marketing strategies. Using a systematic review approach, by drawing on policy documents and academic works published between 2010 and 2025, peer-reviewed studies were analyzed to assess the nexus between marketing effectiveness, transformational tourism, and the UN sustainability goals. Data were synthesized through content and thematic analysis focused on the subject matter. Our review findings show that tourism demonstrates strong potential for economic contribution, biodiversity conservation and livelihood creation but continues to contribute only modestly to GDP and employment, with the dominance of low-skilled labour. Also, persistent challenges in destination marketing, product positioning, and funding have constrained international competitiveness despite significant cultural and ecological attractions. The study argues that aligning tourism policies with SDGs related to decent work, poverty reduction, reduced inequalities, and environmental protection, while strengthening infrastructure, skills development, and digital marketing can reposition tourism as a strategic pillar for long-term socioeconomic transformation in both countries. The study concludes that transformational tourism offers a pathway for both countries to leverage their rich cultural and environmental assets to achieve sustainable development and contribute to the SDGs. The study recommended that deliberate policy frameworks and cross-sectoral collaboration should be put in place, and tourism governance strengthened. There is also the need to improve strategic frameworks that address perception challenges inimical to tourism development in both countries.
