Green Human Resource Management Practices and Organizational Commitment Among Senior Non-Teaching Staff in Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examines the effect of Green human resources practices on organizational commitment among senior non-teaching staff in Delta State University, Abraka, The sampling object used for this work comprises of core senior non-teaching staffs in Delta State University; this is done in respect of Green human resources practices, namely; Green training and development , Green recruitment and selection , Green performance management (Independent variables) and organizational commitment (dependent variable) and responses from the respondents were collected with the aid of five (5) likert scale questionnaire. The study used in this work is the survey research design, the population of the study comprises of 439 senior non-teaching staff members in delta state university, abraka and Taro Yamane formula was used to cull a smaller sample size from the larger population of the study. A total of two-hundred and nine (209) questionnaires were administered to senior non-teaching staff of Delta state University. Out of the two hundred and nine (209) questionnaires, (205) 98% were retrieved, four were not properly filled and (201) was valid and were used for the analysis. The research questions were analyzed with the aid of descriptive statistics. The hypotheses of the study were tested using regressions statistical tools with the aid of SPSS as the basis of testing hypotheses. All three variables show non-significant relationships with organizational commitment (p>0.05). VIF values below 5 indicate no multicollinearity issues. The results suggest that green HRM practices currently have minimal impact on organizational commitment among senior non- teaching staff in Delta State University, possibly indicating need for improved implementation or awareness of these practices. From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that, overall Green human resource management practices has no significant effect on organizational commitment on senior non-academic staffs in Delta State University. The study therefore, recommends that; the university management should observe the followings; create sustainability-focused skill development initiatives, regularly assess training effectiveness, Integrate environmental criteria in job descriptions, develop green competency frameworks, Include sustainability questions in interviews, Establish clear environmental KPIs, introduce green performance incentives, regularly review sustainability performance, increase resource allocation for GHRM initiatives, strengthen policy framework for environmental management, create dedicated sustainability committees, Regularly assess GHRM effectiveness, establish feedback mechanisms for staff input, Periodic review and update of green practices.
