Global Warming and Agricultural Sector Output in Nigeria

Abstract

The research looked at the relationship between climate change and agricultural production in Nigeria from 1980 to 2023. The research used the Malthusian population hypothesis, which posits that reducing agricultural output will have negative consequences on food production, leading to increased hunger and starvation. Climate change is one example of this. A quasi- experimental research design was used in the study. It was determined whether the variables were stationary or not. Researchers used the ARDL method to look for a long-term and short- term correlation between agricultural sector output and temperature increase as a proxy for global warming. The findings demonstrate that rising sea levels induced by global warming are to blame for the stunted development of agricultural output. The unpredictability of exchange rates is worrisome. The research found that timing, adaptation, and the larger economic climate determine whether or not agricultural productivity in Nigeria is negatively impacted by global warming. So, the study's takeaways include that agriculture needs better infrastructure, better planning, and stronger climate adaption measures. Key words: Global warming, Agricultural sector, output
