Principals’ Managerial Strategies for Effective Goal Attainment in Public Secondary Schools in Bayelsa State
Abstract
The study examined principals’ managerial strategies for effective goal attainment in public secondary schools in Bayelsa State. Three objectives, three research questions and three corresponding null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population comprised 202 principals and 4,015 teachers from public senior secondary schools in Bayelsa State, totaling 4,217 participants. A sample of 506 respondents—38 principals and 468 teachers—representing 12% of the total population was drawn using stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire titled Principals’ Managerial Strategies for Effective Goal Attainment Questionnaire (PMSEGAQ), validated by three subject- matter experts. Reliability was established via Cronbach Alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.82. Mean and standard deviation statistics were used to answer the research questions, while independent samples t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that principals adopt managerial strategies, planning strategies, and communication strategies for effective goal attainment in public secondary schools in Bayelsa State. No significant differences were found between the mean ratings of principals and teachers on all three dimensions. The study recommended that principals should strengthen planning and communication strategies, and that the Post Primary Education Board should organize capacity-building programs to enhance principals’ managerial competencies.
