Effect of Individualized Learning Strategy on Students’ Performance in Biology Practical in Colleges of Education in Northeast Nigeria
Abstract
The study investigated the effect of the Individualized Learning Strategy on students’ performance in Biology Practical in Colleges of Education in Northeast Nigeria. The research was guided by a single objective, which sought to determine the performance scores of students taught Biology Practical through the Individualized Learning Strategy in comparison with those taught using the conventional teaching method in Colleges of Education within Northeast Nigeria. To accomplish this objective, one research question and its corresponding hypothesis were formulated. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design, and the population comprised all NCE II students offering Biology Practical in Colleges of Education across Northeast Nigeria. A sample of 150 students, arranged into three groups, was selected for the study. Data were collected using an instrument titled Biology Practical Performance and Retention Test. Mean and standard deviation were employed to answer the research question, while paired and independent sample t-tests were used to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The results of the study revealed that students taught Biology Practical using the Individualized Learning Strategy achieved significantly higher performance scores than those instructed through the conventional method in Colleges of Education in Northeast Nigeria (p = 0.000). Based on this outcome, the study concluded that the Individualized Learning Strategy considerably improves students’ performance in Biology Practical when compared with the traditional teaching approach in Colleges of Education in the region. In view of this conclusion, the study recommended that biology lecturers in Colleges of Education in Northeast Nigeria should adopt the Individualized Learning Strategy in teaching practical Biology to enhance students’ comprehension, laboratory competencies, and overall academic achievement. Furthermore, educational administrators and curriculum planners should organize training and professional development programmes for science educators in order to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills for the effective implementation of the Individualized Learning Strategy in Biology Practical instruction. Key Words: Individualized Learning Strategy, Students’ Performance, Biology Practical, Northeast Nigeria
