Effects of Jigsaw II and Individualized Learning Strategies on Performance and Retention of Students in Biology Practical in Colleges of Education in North-East, Nigeria

Monica Goji, PhD, Prof. Guga Ayuba

Abstract

The study examined the effects of Jigsaw II and Individualized learning strategies on the performance and retention of students in Biology practical in Colleges of Education in North-East Nigeria. Two specific objectives guided the research: to compare the pre-test and post-test performance of students taught Biology practical using the Jigsaw II learning strategy and to compare the pre-test and post-test performance of students taught Biology practical using the Individualized learning strategy in the Colleges of Education in the region. Two research questions and corresponding hypotheses were formulated to address these objectives. A quasi- experimental research design was adopted, and the population comprised all NCE II students offering Biology practical in Colleges of Education in North-East Nigeria. Three groups with a total of 150 students constituted the sample for the study. Data were collected using an instrument titled Biology Practical Performance and Retention Test. Mean and standard deviation were employed to answer the research questions, while paired and independent sample t-tests were used to test the hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that the post-test performance of students taught Biology practical using the Jigsaw II learning strategy was significantly higher than their pre-test performance (p = 0.000). Similarly, the post-test performance of students taught Biology practical using the Individualized learning strategy was significantly better than their pre-test performance (p = 0.000). The study concluded that both Jigsaw II and Individualized learning strategies significantly improved students’ performance and retention in Biology practical. Consequently, the study recommended that Biology lecturers in Colleges of Education should adopt the Jigsaw II learning strategy during practical sessions to promote cooperative learning, active participation and improved academic performance among students.
