Evaluation of Instructional Facilities and their Influence on Pupils’ Academic Performance in Public Primary Schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Abuja

Abstract

This study evaluates the instructional facilities and their influence on pupils’ academic performance in public primary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT, Abuja. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and targeted a population of 2,434 teachers across 98 public primary schools. A sample of 331 teachers was selected using simple random sampling based on the Krejcie and Morgan sample size determination table. Data were collected using a self-designed questionnaire titled Instructional Facilities and Pupils’ Academic Performance Questionnaire , which was validated and it yield a 0.82 validity index and a reliability index of 0.78 using crouchback alpha method. Data were analyzed using mean scores with a benchmark of 2.50 for decision-making. Findings revealed that instructional facilities were fairly available in the schools, with blackboards, graphs, and televisions being more accessible, while items such as computers, projectors, internet facilities, and textbooks were less available. The study further showed a high level of utilization of available facilities by teachers and adequate maintenance practices by school administrators. Importantly, the results indicated that instructional facilities significantly influence pupils’ academic performance by improving understanding, enhancing interest, and positively affecting examination results. The study concluded that although facilities are fairly available, increased provision and sustained utilization are essential for improving pupils’ academic outcomes.
