Job Performance and Job Satisfaction Among Bankers in Rivers State: Implications for Counselling
Abstract
This study investigated job performance and job satisfaction of bankers in Rivers State. Descriptive research and correlational designs were adopted for the study. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study comprised all the bankers in Rivers State estimated at 4, 990. The sample comprised 350 bankers selected through the multistage sampling technique. The instrument titled Job Performance and Job Satisfaction Questionnaire , was developed to gather data for the study. The instrument was divided into two sections. Section A was made up of demographic data. Section B was divided into two (2): Bankers’ Job Performance Questionnaire , and Bankers’ Job Satisfaction Questionnaire , each contained 25 items designed to measure bankers’ job performance and bankers’ job satisfaction. The instrument was validated and tested for reliability, with a reliability index of BJPQ (α=0.83) and BJSQ (α=0.80) determined through the Cronbach Alpha method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation , mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and ANOVA were used to test the hypotheses, tested for statistical significance at .05 level. The data analyzed showed that job performance and job satisfaction were significantly positively related to each other, Gender, marital status and work experience had no significant influence on bankers’ level of job performance, while age had a positive significant influence. Also, gender, marital status and age had no significant influence on bankers’ level of job satisfaction, while work experience had a positive significant influence. Based on the findings of the study, the study recommended amongst others that, workshops on stress management strategies should be organized for bankers by trained professional counsellors and also that counselling units should be built in every banking hall with professional counsellor employed to counsel bankers aimed at helping bankers’ to overcome work overload stress and achieving higher job performance and job satisfaction of bankers.
