Retirement Planning and Retirement Anxiety Among Economics Teachers in Secondary Schools in Calabar Education Zone, Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated retirement planning and retirement anxiety among economics teachers in secondary schools in Calabar Education Zone of Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the study's purpose, one research question and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Related literature was reviewed. A survey research design was adopted, and the population comprised 53 economics teachers in the Zone. The sample is also 53 economics teachers (31 males and 22 females). The sample takes the same figure as the population since the population is small and is taken as a census. The instruments for data collection were two questionnaires titled ‘Retirement Planning Questionnaire ' and 'Retirement Anxiety Questionnaire '. A four-point Likert-type scale was designed and used for data collection. Experts in measurement and evaluation validated the research instruments. The Cronbach alpha Reliability method was used to establish the reliability of the study’s instruments. While simple regression analysis, was employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The result of the analysis revealed that retirement planning significantly influences retirement anxiety. Based on the study's findings, it was therefore recommended, among others, that the government organise pre-retirement counselling early in teachers' career lifespans, during which the psychological aspects of retirement are discussed. Guidance and counselling centres should be established to help individuals assess information that will enable them prepare for the transition more positively.
