Impact of Social Intelligence and Conflict Resolution in Senior Public Secondary Schools in Rivers State
Abstract
The study investigated social intelligence and teacher job satisfaction in senior public secondary schools in Rivers State, the research design adopted for this study is a descriptive survey research. The population of the study comprised of 516 principals of senior public secondary schools in Rivers State. A sample of 320 principals of the total population was used for the study. The stratified sampling technique was used to select 15 principals (respondents) from each of the 22 wards in Port Harcourt Metropolis viz, Obio Akpor LGA (17) and Port Harcourt City LGAs (15) to arrive at 320 respondents. The same method was also used to select them according to gender, educational qualification, marital status, school type, and years of experience. The questionnaire is rated in a 4-point Likert modified scale of Strongly Disagree (SD), Disagree (D), Agree (A) and strongly Disagree (SD). The instrument was divided into two sections. Section one comprised the biographic data while section 2 comprised the items statements response. The instruments used in this study was given to the Psychologist and lecturer at the department of Guidance and Counseling, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. The reliability of the instrument was determined through the Cronbach alpha reliability at the scale of 929>.71 which indicates that the instrument was highly reliable. The research questions were answered using mean and Standard deviation using the mean criterion mean of 2.5. The research hypotheses were tested using the t-test at the significance level of .05. The findings of the study revealed that there is no significance difference between social intelligence and teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Obio Akpor LGA Rivers State. The study concluded that social intelligence is required for teacher job satisfaction. And that such satisfaction may be fostered by the school administrators including the school principal. The paper recommended among others, that Principals should adopt the most optimal approach in handling students’ conflicts in order to forestall occurrences.
