Abstract

The study examined the effects of problem-based learning strategy on students’ achievement in Social Studies in Jos-North, Plateau State, Nigeria. Two specific objectives, two research questions and two corresponding hypotheses were formulated. The quasi-experimental research particularly, the non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design was used. A sample of 148 students from the two selected schools which were assigned to the experimental and control groups respectively. A 50-item multiple choice Social Studies Achievement Test with three sections A, B and C was used for data collection. The internal consistency of the instrument was established using Richard Kuderson formula 20 and internal consistency estimates 0.86 was obtained. The study used means and standard deviation to answer the research questions while ANCOVA was used for testing the hypotheses formulated for the study at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that problem-based learning strategy did increase the students’ achievement in Social Studies. It was also found that, there was no significant effect of gender on achievement of students taught Social Studies using problem-based learning strategy. The study recommended that problem-based learning strategy should be incorporated into junior secondary school social studies curriculum since it has proved to be effective in improving students’ academic achievement irrespective of gender.
