Cooperative and Concept Mapping Teaching Methods and Academic Performance of Home Economic Students in Colleges of Education in South-South, Nigeria

Anthony Bassey Wilson PhD, James Nyong Archibong

Abstract

The study evaluated the effect of concept mapping and cooperative Teaching Methods on junior secondary school students’ performance in South-South geopolitical zone in Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated for the study. The study adopted a survey research design. The population for the study comprised of 316 students in the 2024/25 academic session that was drawn from seven (7) Colleges of Education in the study area. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 248 NCE Students, comprising of 97 male and 151 female students. Data were collected using a 20-item instrument. The instrument was faced validated by three experts. A reliability coefficient was analysed using Cronbach Alpha technique which yielded overall internal consistency coefficient of 0.83. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while null hypotheses were tested using independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The results revealed that male students recorded higher average means (4.57) than female students (4.19) in the use of the Concept Mapping Teaching Method, reflecting stronger comprehension of Home Economics concepts, organization of ideas and recall during assessments. Female students recorded a higher average mean (4.64) in communication skills and problem-solving under the Cooperative Teaching Method, while male students scored higher in critical thinking (4.33) and motivation (4.38). Differences in active participation, idea generation and information retention showed that instructional methods influenced specific aspects of learning and required balanced support for both genders. The researchers recommended that Colleges of Education provided instructional materials and organized structured group activities and training sessions to strengthen students’ competence in both methods.
