Abstract

The study was designed to examine poverty and criminal behavior among youths in Calabar South Local government area of Cross River state. To achieve the objective of this study, three research objectives were formulated and four hypotheses were tested in the study. The research design employed was the Cross-Sectional survey research design. The multi stage sampling technique, were adopted for the study. The data generated from the questionnaire were analysed using the One-way analysis of variance statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance. From the analysis, result revealed that poverty has an impact on the criminal behavior of youths in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross river state. It was summarized that: there is statistically significant influence between low income and the indulgence in criminal behavior among youths in Calabar south Local Government area of Cross River state. There is statistically significant influence between lack of access to basic needs and involvement in criminal behavior among youths in Calabar south Local Government area of Cross River state. There is statistically significant influence between lack of education and involvement in criminal behavior among youths in Calabar south Local Government area of Cross River. Inconclusion; This study has established that poverty has an impact on the criminal behaviour among the youths in Calabar South local government area of Cross River state. This suggests that the increasing wave of criminality which has a devastating effect Calabar south, Cross River State and the Nigerian society is traceable to poverty. It was recommendation among others that youth criminality is a multi-dimensional problem that needs to be addressed on a macro basis. As such, the government should pursue the diversification of the economy with the objective of creating sell-employment schemes in the country through the National Directorate of Employment .
