Management of Skill Oriented Subjects and Goal Attainment in Public Secondary Schools in Cross River State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was carried out to was to examine the relationship between the management of skill- oriented subjects and goal attainment in public secondary schools in Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the aims of the study, two research question were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A review of the literature was carried out conceptually, theoretically and empirically according to the sub-variables of the study. The study adopted a correlational research design. The population of the study comprised all the three hundred and one (301) public secondary schools in Cross River State. A sample of 220 secondary schools were selected for the study. The selection was done through simple random sampling technique and stratified random sampling technique. The main instrument used was a questionnaire titled: Management of Skill-Oriented Subjects and Goal Attainment in Public Secondary Schools Questionnaire (MSOSGAPSSQ). The instrument was both faced and content validated by the researcher’s experts in Educational Measurement Department, University of Calabar and Measurement and Evaluation Unit in the Department of Educational Psychology, University of Calabar. Simple linear regression analysis was adopted to test the hypotheses under the study to ascertain whether to reject or retain them. The results of the statistical analysis from the hypotheses showed that, Business studies subject and Agricultural science subject significantly relate to secondary school goal attainment in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study concluded that the management of skill-oriented subjects and goal attainment among public secondary school in Cross River State. The study recommended among others that, the ministry of education should create awareness on business studies skill-oriented subject in order to enhance employable skills acquisition among secondary school students. Government and non-governmental organizations should organize education programmes in secondary schools like home economics skills such as soap making, catering service and cloth making for students to acquire higher knowledge that will help them to be self-employed.
