Effects of Concept Mapping Strategy on Students’ Achievement in Idea Generation and Organisation in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study investigated the effects of the concept mapping strategy on senior secondary school students’ achievement in idea generation and organisation in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. A quasi-experimental research design, specifically the non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group design, was adopted. The population of the study comprised 6,967 Senior Secondary School II students drawn from 24 public senior secondary schools in Bauchi Local Government Area. A sample of 92 students, consisting of 51 students in the experimental group and 41 students in the control group, was selected from two intact classes in two public senior secondary schools. The schools were selected using simple random sampling, with one school assigned to the experimental group and the other to the control group. Students in the experimental group were taught composition writing using the concept mapping strategy, while students in the control group were taught using the conventional teaching method. The treatment lasted for eight weeks. Data were collected using a Composition Writing Achievement Test developed by the researchers. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Analysis of Covariance . The findings revealed that students exhibited low levels of achievement in idea generation and organisation at the pre-test stage. However, students exposed to the concept mapping strategy achieved significantly higher scores in idea generation and organisation than their counterparts taught using the conventional method. The study concluded that the concept mapping strategy significantly enhances students’ achievement in idea generation and organisation. It was therefore recommended that teachers adopt the concept mapping strategy in teaching composition writing to improve students’ learning outcomes.
