Evaluation of Basic Education Mathematics Curriculum Implementation in Junior Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study was carried out to Evaluate Basic Education Mathematics Curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. It was an evaluation research design carried out in Junior Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State. Context Input Process and Product evaluation model was adopted and four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The total population of this study was two hundred and fifty-four (254) Junior Secondary Three (JSS3) Mathematics teachers in two hundred and fifty-four (254) public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. The sample of 155 JSS3 Mathematics teachers in 155 public secondary schools representing 61.0% of the population was used for the study. Multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted for this study. A researcher made Basic Education Mathematics Curriculum Evaluation Instrument comprising of questionnaires and checklists were used for data collection. The instruments were validated and highly reliable. The reliability coefficient of 0.87, 0.89 and 0.84 was obtained for achievement of curriculum objectives questionnaire, instructional processes questionnaire and teachers’ perception of the effectiveness questionnaire respectively. Frequency count, simple percentage and bar charts were used in analyzing the data. The result showed that the objectives of Basic Education Mathematics Curriculum in Junior Secondary Schools have not been achieved at high extent. The total percentage of Basic Education Mathematics teachers with teaching qualification are more than those without teaching qualification. Mathematics Teachers do not adopt majority of the instructional processes on lesson delivery. Mathematics teachers do not perceive the implementation of Mathematics curriculum as effective. It was therefore concluded that the Basic Education Mathematics curriculum is not effectively implemented in Junior Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State.
