Assessment of Facilitators’ Competencies in the Utilization of ICT Facilities for Teaching and Learning in NTI, Akwa Ibom State

Abstract

The study investigated facilitators’ competencies in the utilization of ICT facilities for teaching and learning at the National Teachers' Institute (NTI) in Akwa Ibom State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. A descriptive survey design was adopted and the population comprised 24 NTI facilitators in Akwa Ibom State. A sample of eighteen (18) facilitators, consisting of 8, 5 and 5 respondents from Uyo, Ikot Ekpene and Eket Study Centres respectively, was randomly selected. Data were collected using a 30-item questionnaire divided into four sections, with a 5-point rating scale. The instrument was facevalidated by three experts in measurement and evaluation from the University of Uyo and reliability analysis using Cronbach’s alpha yielded an overall reliability coefficient of 0.80, with section-specific indices of 0.86, 0.73, 0.82 and 0.80, indicating high reliability. Data analysis involved mean and standard deviation to answer research questions, while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tested the hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Findings showed that ICT facilities at NTI study centres were moderately available, while facilitators demonstrated low competencies in using them. Key challenges included insufficient computers, limited internet access, lack of interactive whiteboards and inadequate training in mobile and video conferencing tools. ANOVA results revealed no significant differences across centres. It was recommended that NTI provide modern ICT resources, functional multimedia tools, reliable internet and regular training to improve facilitators’ capacity for effective teaching and learning.
