Entrepreneurship Education as An Aspect of Skill Acquisition for Socio-Economic Development in Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State

Abstract

The study examined entrepreneurship education as an aspect of skill acquisition for socio- economic development in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. The objectives of the study were to; examine the ways entrepreneurship education enhance innovation and creativity for socio- economic development in tertiary institutions; determine the ways entrepreneurship education enhance skill acquisition; ascertain the extent to which entrepreneurship education enhance self-reliance; and investigate the extent to which entrepreneurship education enhance capacity building, all for socio-economic development in tertiary institution. The study adopted both primary and secondary research method and a descriptive survey design was equally adopted and the sample size was 411 out of the total population of 2,815. The study was anchored on Skill Acquisition Theory propounded by Robert Dekeyser in (2007), complimented by Innovation Theory propounded by Joseph Alois Schumpeter in (1911). The findings revealed that; Entrepreneurship Education enhance innovation and creativity; pave way for networking opportunities, which encourage partnerships and growth mindset, combing knowledge from various fields; industrial collaboration and global competitiveness which encourages socio- economic development; among others. The study recommended that students should be encouraged to have interest in the skill-based subjects/courses to enhance their innovative and creative skill; among others.
