Comparative Analysis of NCE and B.Ed. Graduates’ Performance in Teacher Professional Examination: A Case Study of Fue Pankshin, Plateau State, Nigeria
Abstract
This study examined the comparative performance of National Certificate in Education and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) graduates in the Teacher’s Professional Qualifying Examination , using the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State, Nigeria, as a case study. The primary aim was to determine whether the type of teacher qualification significantly affects success in the PQE, which is a mandatory certification for professional teaching practice in Nigeria. A comparative descriptive survey design was adopted. The study population comprised graduates of both NCE and B.Ed. programs who wrote the TPQE within the specified period. The findings revealed a statistically significant difference in TPQE performance, with B.Ed. graduates consistently outperforming NCE graduates across all years under study. The superior performance of B.Ed. holders was attributed to more rigorous academic exposure, longer duration of training, and broader curriculum coverage in professional pedagogy and research. The study concludes that the type of teacher education qualification significantly influences performance in professional certification examinations. It recommends that policy reforms should focus on strengthening NCE programs to bridge the performance gap, while also promoting B.Ed. training as a preferred standard for teacher education in Nigeria. Furthermore, continuous professional development and exam-focused preparatory support should be provided to NCE holders to enhance their competitiveness in the TPQE.
