Thelma Tersoo Chinyam, Judith Mase Ph.D, Joyce Mcivir Terwase Ph.D

Abstract

One of the cognitive challenges suffered by internally displaced persons globally is the quality of their sleep. Among displaced persons, sleep quality is affected by environmental, social and behavioural factors. Till date, the role of personality traits on sleep quality is inconsistent and still questionable. Therefore, this study investigated personality traits on sleep quality among internally displaced persons in Benue North-west. The study adopted cross-sectional survey design where the participants were 384 internally displaced persons comprising of 155 (40.4%) males and 229 (59.6%) females. Their ages ranged from 20-66years with a mean age of 48.11years (SD=11.050). The study adopted Multi-Stage Sampling technique to draw the participants for the study. The Big Five Inventory and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index were used for data collection. Multiple Linear Regression was used for hypothesis testing. Results indicated that there was a significant influence of personality traits on sleep quality among internally displaced persons. In terms of the dimensions, the result indicated that; extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness made significant positive contributions to sleep quality, while neuroticism, and openness to experience did not. The researchers recommended that internally displaced persons should learn to be sociable (extraversion), committed (conscientiousness) and kind-hearted (agreeableness) to people and events around them, since these facets of personality positively influenced sleep quality. Key Words: Personality traits, Sleep quality, Internally displaced persons, Benue State.
