Thelma Tersoo Chinyam, Joyce Mcivir Terwase Ph.D, Judith Mase Ph.D

Abstract

Poor quality sleep has been a perennial problem especially for internally displaced persons who are traumatized by critical incidents in their communities. Many factors are intricate in determining the quality of sleep experienced by displaced persons. Therefore, this study investigated emotion regulation and sleep quality among internally displaced persons in Benue North-west. The study adopted cross-sectional survey design where the participants were 384 internally displaced persons comprising of 155 (40.4%) males and 229 (59.6%) females. Their ages ranged from 20-66years with a mean age of 48.11years (SD=11.050). The study adopted Multi-Stage Sampling technique to draw the participants for the study. The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index were used for data collection. Standard Multiple regression was used for hypothesis testing. Findings indicated that there was a significant influence of emotion regulation on sleep quality among internally displaced persons. The result further indicated that all the dimensions of emotion regulation; cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression made significant positive contributions to sleep quality among internally displaced persons. It was recommended that Clinical psychologists should design and execute emotion regulation skills training such as cognitive reappraisal skills for internally displaced persons with the aim of building their skills in modulating their thoughts and taking different perspectives for better adaptability to situations around them.
