Exploring Innovative Assessment Methods in Technical Vocational Education and Training to Enhance Effective Skill Acquisition in Nigerian Institutions

Abstract

This paper explores the transformative potential of innovative assessment methods in Technical and Vocational Education and Training , highlighting the limitations of traditional assessment practices that predominantly focus on theoretical knowledge. Traditional assessment techniques in Nigerian TVET emphasize exams and written tests, which often fail to measure students' practical skills and competencies required by employers. This mismatch between academic outcomes and industry needs contributes to the low employability of Nigerian TVET graduates. The study draws on global best practices, including competency- based assessments, project-based assessments, digital tools like e-portfolios and simulations, and peer and self-assessment methods, which have proven effective in countries with advanced TVET systems. Implementing these methods in Nigeria could enhance students' hands-on skills, promote critical thinking, and increase engagement by making assessments more reflective of real-world tasks. However, the adoption of innovative assessment practices faces several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited teacher training, resistance to change, and insufficient financial support. This research advocates for the integration of competency- based assessments within Nigerian TVET and underscores the need for policy reform, increased investment in digital resources, and professional development for educators. Addressing these factors is crucial for aligning TVET education with market demands, thus boosting graduates' employability and supporting Nigeria’s workforce development goals. By adopting innovative assessment approaches, Nigerian TVET institutions could significantly improve educational outcomes, contributing to a more skilled, adaptable, and competitive labor force.
