Leadership Challenges in Managing Cybersecurity Threats in Higher Education in Nigeria: A Systematic Literature Review

Dr Akangbou Vincent

Abstract

This systematic literature review investigates the leadership challenges in managing cybersecurity threats within higher education institutions in Nigeria. As digital technologies become increasingly integrated into academic environments, universities face significant cybersecurity risks that jeopardize their operational integrity and data security. This study adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, ensuring a rigorous and methodical review process. A comprehensive search across major academic databases yielded 1,070 articles, which were systematically screened based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ultimately, 25 peer-reviewed articles were included, focusing on the role of leadership in addressing cybersecurity threats and developing resilient IT infrastructures. The findings reveal a lack of adequate training and resources among university leaders, leading to insufficient prioritization of cybersecurity measures. Additionally, gaps in the literature indicate a need for more empirical research on the effectiveness of leadership strategies aimed at promoting digital safety and awareness. This review underscores the importance of enhancing leadership capabilities in managing cybersecurity challenges, providing insights that could inform policy and practice within the Nigerian higher education sector.
