Abstract

The study appraised the Nigerian University System in the context of global ranking, the study was motivated by the Nigerian universities low ranking in global context. Three research questions were raised and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The research adopted Survey research design, specifically the cross sectional survey research design. A sample of 9,298 academic staff and students of four of the six first generation were selected from the total population of 166,813. The disproportional sample technique was used to select sample from the total population. Instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire named Appraisal of Nigerian University System in the Context of Global Ranking (ANUSCGR) with reliability index of 0.84. This indicated that the instrument is reliable. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation, while the null hypotheses were tested using Pearson product moment correlation at the 0.05 level of significance. Based on the findings, it was concluded that Nigerian universities are ranking low globally because the facilities that will make them rank higher are lacking. The government should provide the necessary facilities that will help Nigerian universities meet up with the global ranking indicators and rank higher in global context.
