Testwiseness and Affective Adjustment as Correlate of Physics Students’ Cognitive Adjustment in Senior Secondary Schools in Benue South Senatorial Zone
Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between students’ testwiseness, and affective adjustment on students’ cognitive adjustment in Physics in senior secondary schools in Benue South Senatorial Zone of Benue State, Nigeria. Three research questions with corresponding hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance gave direction to the study. The study adopted correlational research design and was carried out in Benue South Senatorial Zone of Benue State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised all the four thousand six hundred and forty six (4,646) senior secondary school two (SSS2) students in the 110 public secondary schools in the zone. Cohen, Mannion and Morrison’s (2018) criterion for selecting sample size based on 95% confidence level and 5% confidence interval was employed in determining the sample size of 355 respondents for the study while multistage sampling procedure were employed in drawing the respondents. Two instruments: Testwiseness Scale adopted from Opesemowo et al (2018) with 22 items and Psychological Adjustment Inventory adopted from Sabir (1999) and modified into 20 items in two clusters with 10 items each to measure two components of psychological adjustment were used for the study. The items were face validated by three experts in Research, Measurement and Evaluation Unit of the Department of Science Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka who deemed it suitable for the study. The reliability of the instruments were ascertained by trial testing it on 30 students in senior secondary schools in Benue North-West Senatorial Zone of Benue State, who were not part of the study but shares similar characteristics with the study area. Cronbatch alpha method was used to ascertain the internal consistency and reliability indexes of 0.81 and 0.85 were obtained respectively. On the spot administration and retrieval method was used in administering the instrument to the respondents with the help of 12 Physics teachers from the selected schools.
