Moral and Religious Impact of Parental Discipline on Christian Students in Secondary Schools in Taraba State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study is an investigation into “Impact of parental discipline on the moral and religious mood of Christian students in secondary schools in Taraba State, Nigeria.”. The importance of parental discipline in Taraba state has created severe and protracted concern that has left part of the Christian population in need of urgent attention. The main objective of the study is to ascertain the impact of parental discipline on the moral and religious mood of Christian students in secondary schools in Taraba State, Nigeria. A survey research design method was adopted for this study, with a population of 150,950 Christian students in the state and a sample size of 930 Christian students. A structured questionnaire was used, with a descriptive data analysis using mean and independent t-test. The major findings of the study are: the study disclosed that poor parental discipline has negative impacts on religious and moral life of Christian students with a mean score of 3.1. Parental discipline makes Christian students display honesty, and respect for others with a mean score of 3.0. Parental discipline has both strengthened and weakened the bond between parents and their wards. The following recommendations are made: Christian students should develop critical thinking skills, learn from their parents so as to be responsible people in the society in near future. Parents should not relent in their effort to encourage their wards in keeping their emotions in check and allow them to express this emotion both verbally and non- verbally.
