Emotional Intelligence and Self-Efficacy as Predictors of Chemistry Students’ Achievement in Stoichiometry
Abstract
The deficiencies in students' understanding of stoichiometry have been a significant factor in their poor achievement in the subject. Researchers had tried to tackle this issue by examining various socio-psychological factors, however, none of the reviewed studies specifically investigated the predictive abilities of emotional intelligence (EI) and self-efficacy (SE) in relation to students' achievement and interest in stoichiometry. This study investigated emotional intelligence and self- efficacy as predictors of students’ achievement and interest in stoichiometry. It covered the topics of mass-mass relationships, mass-volume relationships, and calculations in electrolysis. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study, and relevant literature was also reviewed. The study was carried out in Onitsha and Otuocha education zones of Anambra State. Nigeria. The population of the study comprised 4,274 SS2 (senior secondary class 2) Chemistry students in the zones. The study adopted a correlational survey design. The sample comprised 366 SS2 Chemistry students (174 males and 192 females) and was obtained using a proportionate random sampling procedure. Three (3) instruments: Stoichiometry Achievement Test , Emotional Quotient Inventory , and Academic Self-Efficacy Scale served as instruments for data collection. The instruments were validated and reliability established using Kudar Richardson 20 (KR-20) reliability coefficient of SAT was 0.84; EQI and ASES were determined to be 0.82 and 0.77 respectively using Cronbach Alpha. Linear and multiple regressions were used to analyse the research questions and the hypotheses. The hypotheses were analysed at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of the study among others showed P-value 0.000 which indicated EI as a significant predictor of students’ achievement in stoichiometry.
