Influence of Domestic Violence on Academic Performance of Public Senior Secondary School Students in Bauchi State, Implications for Counselling

Abstract

The study focused on the Influence of domestic violence on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Bauchi state Nigeria. The aim of this study is to examine the Influence of domestic violence on the academic performance of senior secondary school students in Bauchi state Nigeria. The research has three specific objectives, three research questions that guide the study and three hypotheses. Correlation design was used for the study. The population of the study consists of 13,458(8,972 males and 4,486 females) distributed within 214 schools. Multi –a stage (proportionate stratify random) sampling technique was used to select the sample of 378 (250 males and 128 females from 7 schools. Hypotheses were formulated and tested at p = 0.05 level of significance. Student Domestic Violence Academic Performance Questionnaire The instrument has the reliability coefficient of Cronbach’s Alpha 0.77. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) while the hypotheses were tested using linear regression Findings from the study revealed that physical violence has no significant influence in predicting academic performance (t=1.626,p>0.05) Emotional violence here Significant (t=2.922, p<0.05) contribution in predicting Academic Performance. Financial Violence here has no Significant (t=.554, p>0.05) Influence on Academic Performance. The government should decisively show interest in the effect of domestic violence by passing in too low, a bill that will effectively address the issue of Domestic Violence as a social ill and crime, to reduce its proliferation. The parents and teachers association of the school should support workshops, seminars and symposiums organised by professional counsellors that will seek to enlighten parents and caregivers on the need for them to be good models to their children.
