Abstract

This study assessed the teaching practice exercise performance of pre-service teachers toward teaching competency in Social Science in Cross River State. A survey research design was adopted for the study and a proportionate simple random sampling technique was used to select a sample size of two hundred (200) pre-service teachers. Instruments used for data collection were an Adopted Teaching Practice Assessment Form and a questionnaire designed by the researcher titled “Assessment of Teaching-Practice Exercise on Pre-Service Teachers towards Teaching Competency (ATPEPTTC). The instrument's validity and reliability were obtained to be 0.70 and 0.78 respectively. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while independent sampled t-test statistics were used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 significant level. The study found that there is no significant difference in the teaching practice performance obtained by the pre-service Social Science teachers based on their college. The study concluded that the Head of a unit of micro-teaching practicum should create a special display session to enhance the ability of student teachers in the Cross River State, Nigeria in the use of chalkboard management during teaching practice.
