Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of truancy on academic performance of senior secondary school students in Port Harcourt Metropolis: Implication for counselling. This study adopts descriptive survey design. Descriptive survey describes collecting of data in order to answer questions concerning the current status of the study. Descriptive survey was chosen because it is appropriate for educational fact-findings and gives a great deal of information which is accurate. It also enables a researcher to gather data at a particular point in time and use it to describe the nature of the existing conditions (Colen, 2010). This study was carried out in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Rivers State, is one of the 36 states of Nigeria. It was created on May 27 1967. Its geopolitical zone is South-South, the primary occupation of the people is farming and fishing. According to census data released in 2006, the state has a population of 5,198, 716, making it the sixth most populous state in the country. Its capital and largest city, Port Harcourt, is economically, significant as the centre of Nigeria’s oil industry. River State is bounded on the South by the Atlantic Ocean, to the North by Imo, Abia and Anambra States, to the east by AkwaIbom State, and to the West by Bayelsa and Delta State. It is a home to three major indigenous ethnic groups, Kalabari, Ikwerre and Ogoni. This study focuses its attention on senior secondary Schools in Port Harcourt Metropolis. The population for the study consists of all senior secondary school students in Port Harcourt Metropolis. The sample size consists of 391 using Taro Yamen formular, out of the population of 18200. The simple random sampling technique was used for the study hence; all the respondents were given equal chance and opportunity. The instrument used for this study was a self-structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. The research instrument was face and content valid
