Effects of Cooperative, Competitive and Individualistic Interaction Patterns on Students’ Attitude Towards the Learning of Senior Secondary School Chemistry

Abstract

The study determined the effects of Cooperative Interaction Pattern , Competitive InteractionPattern , Individualistic Interaction Pattern and Conventional Teacher Expository Method on students’ attitudes towards the learning of senior secondary school Chemistry. The study adopted the pre-test - post-test, quasi - experimental control group design. The sample comprised 187 Senior Secondary III Chemistry students in their intact classes from four schools purposively selected from four Local Government Areas of Ondo State, Nigeria. Chemistry Attitude Scale and Scholastic Ability Test in Chemistry were used for collection of data. Data collected were analysed using Analysis of Covariance . The results showed that the four types of interaction patterns (CIP, CMIP, IIP and CTEM) differed significantly in the enhancement of students’ attitude to Chemistry (F = 37.12, p < 0.05) with CIP( X = 26.43) having the highest effect followed by CMIP ( X =17.09 ) and IIP ( X =8.43).The results indicated that students exposed to cooperative interaction pattern showed more positive attitude towards the learning of Chemistry than their counterparts exposed to other interaction approaches, hence is likely to motivate learners. Finally, the results also showed that gender had no significant effect on students’ attitudes towards Chemistry. It is recommended among others thatChemistry teachers should be exposed to cooperative classroom interaction approach through seminars, workshops and conferences in order to promote social interaction, active students’ participation, discovery learning, motivation, learning by doing and learning by experience among students.
