Analysing the use of Extension Teaching Aids in Educating the Cassava Contact Farmers in Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract

The research examined how extension agents in Kogi State, Nigeria, used extension teaching aids which are devices that are used to support teaching and learning to educate cassava contact farmers. Extension teaching aids are a methodical utilization of both software and hardware equipment for the purpose of instructing and learning. A total of 240 randomly selected farmers completed the questionnaires used to gather data for this study, 236 of whom returned the forms in a consecutive manner. The data obtained was analyzed using Descriptive Statistics, Binary Logit regression model and the mean score from three points likert scale. Result indicated that most (97.03%) are in their active and productive ages, dominated by males and most (89.41 %`) of them have attended one form of formal education or the other. It was also shown that GSM calls/text massages (X? = 2.80) as contemporary extension teaching aids, radio and television with mean score (X? = 2.73 and X? = 2.21) as conventional extension teaching aids were mostly used. Binary logit regression showed that marital status, household size, educational level and annual income were significant (P ? 0.01) socioeconomic variables of farmers that have an impact on how well-informed or instructed they were about acquiring agricultural information via Contemporary teaching tools. The study indicated that conventional teaching aids continue to be a veritable instructional tools, however, contemporary teaching and learning aids are a panacea to agricultural information giving and taking in this new and digital era.The thrust of this research hinges on the fact that information needs of farmers can only be met through effective and practicable teaching aids. It adds value to the existing literature in the area of instructional materials for effective extension teaching that should address the preferences and interests of the cassava contact farmers.
