Abstract

Cooperative Societies provide a platform for members to pool their resources, reducing financial risks and improving stability, it can help members negotiate better prices for goods and services thereby increasing members' income. Cooperative Societies also provide social, environmental and other benefits such as empowerment for suppressed groups, improving social cohesion, improving the standard of living of individuals, promoting sustainable farming and renewable resources practices, promoting education and training, which fosters innovation. This research explores the role of institutions in supporting Cooperative Society Development in Nigeria. The study aims to analyze the types and levels of institutional support provided to Cooperative Societies, examine the impact of institutional support on Cooperative Development, and identify the challenges faced by Cooperative Societies in accessing institutional support. The study used the survey research design. Multistage sampling technique was used to sample respondents who were given copies of questionnaire to fill. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean and standard deviation. Findings reveal that cooperative societies rely on multiple funding sources. Findings equally indicate strong institutional commitment to capacity building. Respondents affirmed receiving regular leadership training, financial management training, governance workshops, entrepreneurship development, and technical skills training. It is recommended that institutions and government agencies should increase budgetary allocations and subsidies to cooperative societies to enhance their financial capacity and sustainability. It is also recommended that a clear and consistent communication mechanisms should be established to ensure cooperative societies are adequately informed about available support opportunities.
