Intellectual Capital Management and Performance of Listed Industrial Goods Firms in Nigeria: Moderating Role of Foreign Directorship

Abstract

The study examined the moderating role of foreign directorship on the relationship between intellectual capital management and performance of industrial goods firms in Nigeria. Intellectual capital management was proxied using human capital management and structural capital Management . Financial performance on the other hand was proxied using net assets per share while moderating variable used for the study was foreign directorship . Ex post facto design was adopted and data for this study was collected from the annual reports and accounts of the 12 listed industrial goods firms listed on the floors of Nigerian Exchange Group for the period of 2020-2024. Panel Least squares model was used in the data analysis and the results of the study showed a significant and positive association between human capital management, structural capital management and financial performance of industrial goods firms in Nigeria at 5% significant level. Also, foreign directorship moderates the relationship between human capital management, structural capital management and firm financial performance in Nigeria at 5% level of significance. The study therefore concludes that intellectual capital management enables firm financial performance. Also, foreign directorship boost the relationship between intellectual capital management and firm financial performance in Nigeria. Thus, the study recommends that industrial goods firms in Nigeria should develop a means to improve their human and structural capital as any negative changes in that will impact their financial performance. Firms are also recommended for foreign directorship as it moderates the relationship between intellectual capital management and firm financial performance in Nigeria.
