Abstract

This paper examines the contributions of cooperative societies and microfinance institutions to rural agricultural development in Nigeria, focusing on credit access, productivity enhancement, and poverty reduction among smallholder farmers. Through analysis of recent literature and empirical studies, the research reveals that both cooperatives and MFIs significantly improve farmers' access to financial services, increase agricultural output, and contribute to poverty alleviation. However, challenges including low capital base, poor governance, high interest rates, and infrastructural deficits constrain their effectiveness. The study recommends policy interventions to strengthen these institutions as vital tools for sustainable agricultural transformation in rural Nigeria.
