Effects of Problem-Based Learning on Senior Secondary II Students’ Interest in Economics in Jos South L.G.A. Of Plateau State
Abstract
The study investigated the effects of problem-based-learning on senior secondary II students’ interest in economics in Jos South L.G.A. of Plateau State. The study raised two specific objectives, two research questions answered and two hypotheses tested. The design adopted was a quasi- experimental research design and the population consisted of 2335 senior secondary school Economics students in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The sample consisted of two Senior Secondary Schools selected from the 20 Senior secondary schools with 100 students to form two intact classes assigned to the experimental and control group respectively. A 20-item Students Interest in Economics Questionnaire was used for data collection. The data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and t-test of independent sample was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the interest mean score between the experimental group before exposure to treatment and there is no significant difference between students’ interest in the experimental group and the control group after exposure to treatment. The study recommended that Economics teachers should be trained to apply PBL in teaching Economics at secondary level. It is also recommended to develop lesson plans according to the basic principles of problem-based learning strategy and PBL strategy should be adopted in schools to allow students interactions and encourage higher order thinking level.
