Abstract

The study investigated the effect of diagnostic assessment with remediation on secondary school students’ achievement in Economics in Jos North local government area, Plateau State, Nigeria. To achieve this, three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design, specifically the pre-test and post-test non-equivalent control group research design. The population of the study was made up of 1,626 SS II students from 22 secondary schools in North LGA. Simple random sampling was used to select two public secondary schools from Jos North LGA, after which the two SSII intact classes from the two public secondary schools were used for the study. School A was used as the experimental group, having 35 students, while school B was used as the control group, having 30 students. Economics Achievement Test with 50 items was used as the instrument for data collection. The reliability coefficients of the instruments were determined using Kuder-Richardson K-21 method, and coefficients of 0.92 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer research questions1 and 2, while research questions three was answered using graphs. The hypotheses were tested using ANCOVA, at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students assessed in the experimental group achieved significantly higher than the control group after treatment. The study showed that male students had higher achievement mean scores than females in the experimental group and there was no statistically significant difference in the achievement between male and female students. There was no interaction effect of treatment and gender on achievement of students in Economics. It was recommended that the State Ministry of Education should organize training workshops and seminars for secondary school teachers to enhance their understanding of how to use and apply diagnostic assessment for an improved performance of Economics students.
