The Nexus Between Business Ethics and Firm Success: A Survey of Quick Service Restaurants in Rivers State
Abstract
This study examines the relationship between business ethics and firm success in the quick service restaurant sector of Rivers State, Nigeria. Despite the growing emphasis on ethical business practices globally, the specific impact of ethical conduct on firm performance in Nigeria's quick service restaurant industry remains underexplored. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 250 managers and employees across 35 quick service restaurants in Rivers State using structured questionnaires. Simple regression analysis was employed to test the hypothesis that business ethics significantly influences firm success. Results indicate a strong positive relationship (R2 = 0.627, p < 0.001) between business ethics and firm success, suggesting that ethical practices contribute substantially to organizational performance in this sector. The findings demonstrate that restaurants emphasizing ethical customer treatment, employee fairness, food safety standards, and transparent operations achieve higher levels of success as measured by customer satisfaction, employee retention, profitability, and market reputation. The study concludes that business ethics is not merely a moral imperative but a strategic asset that drives competitive advantage in the quick service restaurant industry. Recommendations include institutionalizing ethical codes, regular ethics training, and integration of ethical considerations into performance management systems.
