Table of Specification and Content Representativeness for Standardization and Quality Assurance in the Instructional Process

Abstract

The table of specification is one important assessment tool used by teachers to optimise learners' behavioural outcomes. This tool is required to adequately design tests, examination and assessment items during content development used for instructions at different levels of knowledge impartation and acquisition to ensure it aligns with learning objectives and the learning scope is adequately covered; hence, teachers should consider it necessary for a productive and accountable process in education. Learner’s instructions are basically designed to address the three domains of learning: cognitive, affective and psychomotive domains. This paper, therefore, unravels the importance of the Table of Specification for content representativeness in the instructional process for quality assurance and standardisation in learning. The steps for the construction of a teacher-made test and table of specifications were adequately addressed. The paper also provided suggestions on how teachers can effectively deign table of specification to ensure quality and standardized learning and assessment in education, among which are the adequate coverage of learning contents, alignment of the behavioural objectives and planned training for new teachers in teacher education programs.
