Stress Management Strategies and Employee Performance of Construction Firms in Rivers State
Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between stress management strategies and employee performance in construction firms operating in Rivers State, Nigeria. Despite the high-stress nature of the construction industry, empirical evidence on how stress management interventions affect employee performance in this sector remains limited, particularly in developing country contexts. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 280 employees across 40 construction firms in Rivers State through structured questionnaires. Simple linear regression analysis was employed to test three hypotheses examining relationships between organizational stress management practices, individual coping strategies, work environment modifications, and employee performance. Results indicate significant positive relationships between all three stress management dimensions and employee performance (R2 = 0.584, F = 385.42, p < 0.001), with organizational stress management showing the strongest effect (? = 0.395, p < 0.001). The findings demonstrate that construction firms implementing comprehensive stress management strategies achieve superior employee performance outcomes through enhanced wellbeing, reduced burnout, and improved work engagement. The study concludes that stress management is a critical determinant of performance in the high-pressure construction industry. Recommendations include institutionalizing stress management programs, promoting healthy coping mechanisms, optimizing work environments, and integrating wellbeing considerations into project management systems.
