Impact of Cooperative Societies' Intervention on Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises Performance in Delta State, Nigeria

EGINIWIN Joseph Ese , ONOVUGHE Abel

Abstract

The study examined the impact of cooperative societies' intervention on small and medium-scale enterprises' performance in Nigeria with focus on Delta State. The study utilizes the descriptive survey design combined with correlational and causal research design. The data for the study were collected via a validated self-designed structured questionnaire administered to four hundred SME operators who are members of a recognized and registered cooperative society in Delta State. Data gathered for the study were analyzed using the ordinary least squares multiple regression analysis via the statistical package for social sciences version 23 to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that FIS (?=0.435, p<0.05), MEP (?=0.198, p<0.05), and NFIS (?=0.281, p<0.05) all have a significant positive impact on SME performance. The model for the study explains a substantial 71.2% of the variation in SME performance. Based on the findings, the study concludes that cooperative societies are vital institutional mechanisms for enhancing SMEs' performance; hence, they should strengthen the intervention strategy to maximize their developmental role in the society.
