Evaluation of Skills Required for Repair and Service of Modern Mechanical Technology Devices for Job Creation Amongst Youth in Rivers State

Abstract

The study evaluates the skills required for repair and service of modern mechanical technology devices for job creation amongst youths in Rivers State. Specifically, it evaluates machining skill required for repair and service of modern mechanical technology devices for job creation amongst youths, auto-mechanic skill required for repair and service of modern mechanical devices for job creation, milling and drilling skill required in repair and service of modern mechanical technology devices for job creation, personal development and youths integration in the growth of society. Two research questions guided the study which adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised 11 mechanical trade teachers in the four Government Technical Colleges in Rivers State. There were no sample and sampling technique as the entire population was used. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire titled Evaluation of Required Skills in Repair and Service of Modern Mechanical Technology Devices for Job Creation Amongst Youths Questionnaire (ERSRSMMTDJCAQ), with a reliability coefficient of 0.80 and a structured interview. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Findings revealed that mechanical trade teachers agreed on auto- mechanic skill, milling and drilling skill with mean of 2.50 and above across items relating to job creation, self-reliance and employability. It was recommended among others that Government technical colleges should integrate modern auto-mechanic training skill Q such as computerized diagnostics, electronic system repair, and hybrid vehicle maintenance into their curriculum to meet current industry standards and enhance graduate’s employability. Vocational and technical colleges should provide practical training on precision measurement, CNC machine operation, and maintenance using modern tools and technologies to equip learners with relevant machining skills for industrial needs and job creation.
