The Role of Educational Technology Tools in Enhancing Teaching and Learning: A Study of Selected Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

This research investigated the role of educational technology as a tool for enhancing teaching and learning within selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and analyzed. The study utilized a descriptive survey research design. The population consisted of two hundred and twenty (220) respondents, who were randomly selected from various tertiary institutions, with the entire population being sampled through a simple random sampling method. Data were gathered using a structured twelve-item questionnaire aimed at obtaining insights into the utilization and effects of educational technology in the teaching and learning processes. The random sampling method was applied to ensure equity and representativeness in respondent selection. The collected data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to address the research questions, while a Chi-Square statistical tool was employed to evaluate the proposed hypothesis at a significance level of 0.05. The study's findings indicated that educational technology significantly positively influences students' academic performance and enhances the effectiveness of teaching and learning in tertiary institutions. Furthermore, the results suggested that the integration of educational technology fosters increased student engagement, a deeper comprehension of course material, and more effective instructional delivery by faculty members. However, the study also highlighted challenges such as insufficient technological infrastructure and limited access to current software and hardware. In light of these findings, the study recommends that higher education institutions in Nigeria should be adequately equipped to invest in contemporary educational technologies by acquiring updated software and hardware, as well as establishing the essential information technology infrastructure to facilitate effective teaching and learning.
