Crisis Management and Organisational Performance in the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)

Olumati Ikechi Festus

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between crisis management and the organisational performance of the Nigerian Ports Authority , focusing specifically on the dimensions of crisis prevention, crisis mitigation, and crisis response. Recognising the critical role of effective crisis management in port operations, the study adopted a quasi-experimental, cross-sectional design, employing both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 252 senior staff across NPA offices in Rivers, Lagos, Delta, and Cross Rivers states. Secondary data on operational performance were obtained from the NPA’s 2024 financial and operational reports. The study employed the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to analyse the relationships between crisis management dimensions and organisational performance indicators, particularly effectiveness, governance accountability, efficiency, and revenue generation. The findings revealed strong positive relationships between crisis prevention and effectiveness (r = 0.684, p < 0.05), crisis mitigation and effectiveness (r = 0.721, p < 0.05), and crisis response and effectiveness (r = 0.758, p < 0.05). These results indicate that proactive risk identification, effective contingency planning, and timely crisis response significantly enhance operational efficiency, service continuity, and stakeholder confidence within the NPA. The study concludes that structured crisis management practices are critical for improving organisational performance in port operations. Based on these findings, it recommends that the NPA institutionalise comprehensive crisis management frameworks, including early-warning systems, resource mobilisation strategies, and rapid- response protocols, to strengthen operational resilience and sustainable performance.
